On November 29, 2018, Beatriz Susana Uitts, LL.M., J.S.D., and Liza E. Smoker, Esq., of The John J. Brunetti Human Trafficking Academy, guest lectured at the Legal Studies Magnet Program of Miami Lakes Middle School in celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (“UDHR”).

These exceptional students were well-versed on the importance of human rights and will participate in the Model United Nations competition in the coming year under the instruction of their teacher, Lisa DeYarza.  The presentation emphasized the relationship between modern day slavery –  human trafficking –  and Article 4 of the UDHR which states, “No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.”  As part of the session, students discussed how they might positively impact human rights and committed to share the importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with their family and friends.
