Academy Offers its One-Week Training on the 20th Anniversary of the TVPA

On the 20th Anniversary of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, the Academy offered a critical assessment of the state of labor trafficking domestically and abroad. The certificate program attracted over 90 participants for all over the U.S. and the world. The Human Trafficking Academy in partnership with the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See hosts at the Vatican a conference on: Building Bridges of Freedom—Public- Private Partnerships to End Modern Day Slavery. Among other personalities, Congressman Chris Smith, the prime sponsor of five major laws and seventeen international resolutions aimed at combating the scourge of human trafficking in the United States and around the world.

At the invitation of the Joint Congressional Committee on the Oversight of Intelligence Agencies and Activities, and the Honorable Congreso de la Nación, of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the preparation of their anti-trafficking law, Dr. Roza Pati visits Argentina to give input on the new bill, and she also delivers a lecture on Combating Human Trafficking: The Role of Civil Society. Argentinean Congresswoman Stella Maris Córdoba also visits St. Thomas School of Law to learn more about best practices in law and policy.

The Miami Dade Declaration of Principles on Human Trafficking is Drafted

A set of law and policy recommendations called The Miami Declaration of Principles on Human Trafficking is drafted by intergovernmental, governmental, non-governmental and academic experts of national and international stature at an interdisciplinary symposium. This Declaration was presented by Dr. Roza Pati at the OSCE meeting in Vienna, Austria. The Declaration has guided law and policy nationally and abroad.

St. Thomas Law Hosts “Invisibl Chains: Breaking the Ties of Trafficking in Person”

St. Thomas University School of Law hosts an international conference, co-sponsored with The Miami Herald, WFOR-TV, and the National Italian American Foundation titled Invisible Chains: Breaking the Ties of Trafficking in Persons. Ambassador Jim Nicholson, of the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See, and Ambassador John Miller of the TIP Office at the U.S. Department of State were in attendance. Sister Eugenia Bonetti (pictured center), Trafficking in Persons Hero Award recipient was one of our honored guests; so was Francis Bok, survivor of child trafficking from Sudan and author of “Escape from Slavery.”
